J.Hopenstand is a Swiss leather goods maison based near Lausanne, reviving a Paris workshop opened by the craftsman Jacques Hopenstand in 1925. It sells reversible made-to-order belts, buckles sold separately, cardholders, envelopes and small accessories, all configured online and handcrafted in France and Switzerland. The site runs in French and English on a custom front end, prices in Swiss francs, euros or dollars, and ships worldwide.

Website Design

Three typefaces with distinct jobs. Oswald, a condensed sans, carries navigation and headings, Playfair Display handles display lines, and Source Sans Pro sets body copy, with Times New Roman appearing in a few editorial passages.

Warm neutrals taken from the leather. The interface works in off-white and a grey scale over a near-black, with two taupes used for accents that match the calf and nubuck shown in the product photography.

Photography before copy. The homepage opens on a full-width image and a single line, then moves through workshop shots before any product grid appears.

Shopping Experience

The product is a configurator. A classic belt is built in four numbered steps, leather choice, buckle choice, size and initials, and the bespoke route extends the same pattern to six steps with a wider material list including karung, suede, calf and selachii.

Options are described, not just swatched. Every leather states material, touch and width, for example bull-calf from French tanneries, soft and grained, 33 mm, compatible with all our buckles. Buckle entries explain each finish, from palladium and 4N gold to rhodium-plated 925 silver.

A live summary with edit links. A Summary of your belt panel lists the chosen leathers, buckle, size and initials, each with its own Modify link, and the total updates as choices change. Adding initials is priced openly at 20 Swiss francs.

Sizing is explained rather than assumed. The size step notes that belts have five holes and are measured from the buckle to the third hole, offers centimetres or inches, and links a separate size guide. Leather samples can be ordered for 10 francs before committing.

Brand Storytelling

A dated origin. The homepage states that in 1925 Jacques Hopenstand opened the doors of his first workshop in Paris, with a history page and a Savoir-faire section carrying the detail.

Press quoted in its own language. Extracts from RTS, Le Temps and a menswear blog run in French and English side by side, including Le Temps on the Paris maison being reborn from Lausanne fifty years after it disappeared.

Art to Wear. Artist collaborations are presented as a distinct collection with the artist and work credited, positioning the belt as a surface for contemporary art.

Notable Features

Reversibility built into the viewer. Belts are shown recto and verso with a control that flips between the two faces, matching the construction the brand sells on.

Stated lead times and a ten year warranty. Each configurator repeats free shipping in four to six weeks for bespoke pieces and one to two weeks for classics.

Out of stock handled two ways. Temporarily unavailable pieces collect contact details for a restock notice, while sold-out limited editions route to the newsletter instead.
