I think a lot of people still make the same mistake when they’re comparing platforms like Printful and Fourthwall. They think they’re going to be judging both on which one gives them the best product variety and quality.

They’re really figuring out something else: whether they just need a print on demand partner, or a system that lets them launch and scale a brand without taking on the work of several full-time employees.

Printful is still one of my favorite names in print on demand, with an excellent selection of products, handy tools like Quick Stores, and integrations with most ecommerce platforms and marketplaces.

Fourthwall is very different. It gives you the whole brand toolkit, from a professional store, to a retail-grade POD catalog, extensive support, and plenty of options if you decide you want to expand out of just selling custom merch.

Fourthwall vs Printful: Quick Verdict

Fourthwall is better if you’re building an entire brand, and you want options. You get the branded storefront, the full premium POD catalog, POD customer support and tax handling, and options to sell digital products, custom items, and memberships too.

Printful is great if you already have an ecommerce engine, and what you really need is product quality and fulfillment you can trust. It works with most of the major selling channels, from Shopify to Etsy, gives you excellent print quality every time, and even has a pretty generous paid plan that can save you a lot of money when you decide to grow your custom merch strategy.

What Are Fourthwall and Printful? Side by Side

Printful is your production partner for global print on demand. Fourthwall is your brand homebase.

With Printful, you already have a brand hub on something like Shopify, Wix, or even TikTok Shop. You connect that storefront to Printful, choose and design the products you want to sell, and Printful handles the production and fulfillment. It also gives you plenty of handy tools, like a Design Maker, mockup generator, and 24/7 customer support.

It’s a great system, and one I’ve recommended to a lot of creative entrepreneurs in the past. Still, you do need to deal with a lot yourself. You have to build your store, connect apps, handle taxes, marketing, and integrations with apps. Printful is just one layer.

Fourthwall is the whole system. You build your store with a custom domain, and choose the products you want to sell. Those products might come straight from Fourthwall’s retail-grade catalog (the Signature collection is excellent). They might also include digital downloads, memberships, or custom sourced items like enamel pins.

As well as handling production and fulfillment on the POD side, Fourthwall also acts as your Merchant of Record for tax, and deals with customer support issues for anything sold from its catalog. It’s less POD partner, more full brand development partner.

Fourthwall vs Printful Pricing and True Cost

I’m starting with pricing first because a lot of people look at Fourthwall and Printful and think they’re offering similar value for money. Both platforms have a free plan, but there’s a big difference in what you get for free.

With Printful, the free plan gives you access to the full product catalog, automatic fulfillment, unlimited stores, 10 quick stores, and design tools. The Growth plan costs $24.99 per month (or becomes free when you’re earning $12k a year in sales). It gives you discounts, exclusive limited-time deals, and more design options (like a large front print for certain products).

All of that’s fine, but with Printful you still need to pay for an ecommerce homebase, premium themes, email tools, tax support, customer support software, product samples, and so on.

Fourthwall gives you a lot more for free. Its free plan includes everything, including your storefront. You only pay the base cost of the products you sell with POD, and there’s a 5% transaction fee on digital products and memberships. The paid plan (Pro) costs $19 per month and removes the fees on digital products, while also giving you a few extras, like unlimited team members and $10 in sample credits per month.

The cost of the POD products can seem a little higher on Fourthwall at first: depending on what you want to sell, an AS Colour hoodie starts at around $38.46 for instance (though there are cheaper options). Still, Fourthwall saves you money on the extras you might not think about when you’re first setting a store up with Printful.

Fourthwall vs Printful: Product Options and Quality

One of the biggest differences between Fourthwall and Printful is what you can sell with both. Printful wins in terms of the total number of customizable POD products available, with over 500 items to choose from (compared to Fourthwall’s almost 400). But print on demand merch is all you can sell.

Arguably, you could add extra integrations to Shopify if you wanted to dive into memberships and digital product sales too, but that’s extra work, and extra expense.

On the plus side, Printful has a good reputation for quality. It sells all the major POD staples alongside eco-conscious options, and also gives you a range of production options like DTG, embroidery, all-over print, and DTF.

For POD, Fourthwall’s catalog is smaller, curated around retail-grade blanks and exceptional quality items like Comfort Colors tees, Bella + Canvas shirts, Cotton Heritage hoodies, Yupoong hats and beanies, mugs, stickers, desk mats, and higher-end Signature products.

It also supports DTG, DTFx, screen printing, embroidery, sublimation, and limited-run options like screen printing and cut-and-sew drops. Plus it works with partners to ensure the quality is consistent every time.

What makes Fourthwall special, though, is that it doesn’t just concentrate on POD. You can sell custom items you source yourself, offer digital downloads, create memberships, and accept donations. You can even bundle digital and physical products into one offer.

Printful may be great for POD, but Fourthwall is clearly better if you want different sales avenues and opportunities under one roof.

Fourthwall vs Printful: Who Handles What?

With Printful, there’s a clear point where the company stops doing the work for you. The team’s already sourced the products, and they also handle quality assurance on their side. Plus, like any print on demand company, they handle production and shipping (worldwide).

What you don’t get is much support with what happens after a sale. If a customer has an issue with a product, you’re expected to deal with it, Printful won’t handle that for you. Similarly, Printful might charge tax on orders depending on where they’re going. You still have responsibilities as a seller. You’re your own Merchant of Record, and you have to handle tax rules on your side.

Fourthwall gives you more end-to-end assistance. Yes, it deals with POD production and fulfillment, but it also manages customer service requests for products in its catalog. Plus, it acts as your Merchant of Record, dealing with sales tax collection, registration, and remittance for you.

It also gives you a few extra forms of support you won’t find on Printful, like access to a designer community if you need help coming up with products, an AI assistant to help with running your store, and an easy way to find and source truly unique items like keyboards and plushies.

Fourthwall vs Printful: Integrations and Extras

Printful’s integrations are focused mainly on getting your catalog and your existing store connected. It plugs into all the major sales environments you’d expect, like WooCommerce, Shopify, eBay, and TikTok Shop. It also gives you the “Quick Stores” option if you want to launch a quick single-page shop without a full ecommerce back-end.

Fourthwall doesn’t need the same integrations. You don’t need something that connects with Shopify, because you already get a free storefront. If you want to expand your sales channels, you can take advantage of the pre-built connectors for social platforms like TikTok Shop or YouTube Product Shelf. There are also integrations for things like Klaviyo and Mailchimp, for marketing.

The “extras” are different on both platforms too. Printful has its excellent design tools and free product mockups. Fourthwall has things like:

Who Should Use Fourthwall and Who Should Use Printful?

If you’re already running an ecommerce store and just need someone who can give you great products to add to your catalog, and manage fulfillment for you, consider Printful. It’s ideal if you already have an ecommerce site, and you need a POD partner you can trust.

Fourthwall is what you pick when setting up a store, handling a bunch of integrations, and managing everything as you scale sounds exhausting.

If you need a full home for your ecommerce brand, and avenues into various different selling options, from premium print on demand, to digital product sales, Fourthwall is the answer. It reduces the amount of things you need to bolt together before you have something ready to run and scale.

It also takes more of the work off your shoulders, with its AI assistant, Merchant of Record services, customer support for catalog products, and easy growth options.

So it’s a simple toss-up really.
