Indian Type Foundry external link icon

Indian Type Foundry is a digital type foundry based in Ahmedabad that designs and licenses retail fonts for Indian and Latin scripts, alongside custom commissions. The library covers thirteen scripts, from Devanagari, Bengali, Tamil and Malayalam through to Latin, Arabic and Thai, and the site states the foundry has drawn type for Apple, Google, Samsung and Sony. Licences are sold direct through a custom-built storefront rather than a hosted cart platform.

Website Design

Greyscale on white. The interface is colourless by choice: body text at #2A2A2A on white, with greys at #EEE, #B4B4B4 and #3E3E3E and a near-black #171717 for inverted panels. Nothing competes with the specimens.

The site is set in its own retail fonts. Body copy runs in Caravel and headings in Begum, both ITF releases, so browsing the library doubles as a demonstration of two families in use.

Masked labels on the navigation. Each nav link is written twice in the markup, once as text and once inside a mask layer, so the label swaps rather than changes colour on hover.

Specimens set the page rhythm. Font entries render as waterfalls at 600, 60, 36, 24, 14 and 10 pt, using a Kafka passage as the running sample, with tabs for Waterfall, Glyphs and Specifications above each block.

Shopping Experience

A filter rail in place of a product grid. The library is entered by script, by classification with live counts (Sans 100, Display 69, Serif 22, Script 12, Slab 7) and by intended usage, from Newspapers and Branding to Wayfinding, Comics and Books.

A finder written as a sentence. Alongside the filters sits a fill-in-the-blank control reading “I’m looking for a [script] [classification] font for [usage]”, which turns the same taxonomy into one line.

Every price is quoted in four currencies. The Duplet Complete family of 14 fonts shows 432.85 EUR, 500.00 USD, 35,000.00 INR and 370.55 GBP side by side, and a single style such as Duplet Thin Italic shows 43.29 EUR, 50.00 USD, 3,500.00 INR and 37.06 GBP.

Licence type is the variant, not size or colour. Buying options expand per style and per family, drawing on nine licence classes: Print, Web, App, eBook, Broadcasting, Corporate, Service, Trial and Educational. The cart is a slide-out panel that routes to a self-hosted checkout.

Brand Storytelling

Designers are credited and given pages. Family pages name the designers, and each has a profile of their own, so releases are attributed to people rather than the foundry alone.

The writing is about letterforms. A family page explains its default single-storey a and g, the alternates for k, u, G, K, M and the ampersand, case-sensitive punctuation and tabular figures, before listing the supported languages.

Notable Features

Trial and educational licences by form. A request form on each family page splits professionals from students, with professional trials approved immediately and fonts sent by email.

Recency built into the navigation. Two panels list what has shipped in the past 90 days, split into new Latin and new Indian language fonts.

Counts shown even at zero. The script filter states the size of each library next to its name, including scripts carrying no releases.
