Stumptown Coffee Roasters is a coffee roaster and retailer based in Portland, Oregon, selling whole bean and ground coffee blends, single origin lots and cold brew alongside brewing gear and merchandise, built on Shopify.
Website Design
A brown-black and cream palette. The site runs on near-black brown (#1f1815) set against a warm cream ground (#f6f5f3), with a muted gold (#c0a868) reserved for hover states and highlights. It reads as a roastery rather than a lifestyle brand: dark, matte and grounded in coffee-bag tones.
Windsor for display, GT Flexa for everything else. Headlines run in the serif display face Windsor, while body copy and navigation use the sans GT Flexa, with GT Flexa Mono set small for labels like flavor notes and product categories.
Full-bleed sections over a grid. The homepage stacks horizontal blocks rather than a conventional grid, each product or promotion occupying its own section with a color-blocked background. Photography dominates: coffee bags shot on transparent, neutral grounds, alongside lifestyle shots for gear and merch.
Shopping Experience
Cards carry tasting notes, not just names. Product tiles show the coffee’s name, category (Blend, Single Origin, Merch, Gear) and flavor notes such as “Citrus, Dark Chocolate, Raisin” rather than a plain thumbnail and price.
One-time or subscribe, chosen at the product page. Hair Bender, the signature espresso blend, lists at $19 for 12oz with a 5lb option, and the buy box asks for one-time purchase or subscription before the size and quantity controls.
A tasting-note spectrum replaces a star rating. Product pages plot flavor on a scale from “Light & Bright” to “Dark & Bittersweet,” alongside a customer testimonial and B Corp and Direct Trade certification badges.
Subscriptions carry their own incentive. New subscribers get 15% off the first five shipments with code 15OFF5, and the subscription page separately promotes free shipping for life. Free shipping on one-time orders starts at $45.
Brand Storytelling
Product names carry their own history. Hair Bender’s product story traces its name to a historic Portland beauty parlor, and an FAQ accordion below answers questions on espresso suitability, storage and brew compatibility rather than repeating marketing copy.
Cold brew gets its own headline moment. The current hero promotes Sunrider, described as the brand’s first single origin whole bean cold brew, under the line “You can’t own the sun, but you can ride it.”
Notable Features
A quiz replaces a filter. Rather than sorting the catalog by roast or origin, a Coffee Quiz tool steers shoppers to a blend based on their answers.
Checkout carries a donation prompt. A nonprofit donation option appears at checkout, alongside the standard wholesale and bulk ordering paths listed separately in the footer.
Merch runs past mugs and tumblers. Beyond drinkware, the gear shop stocks Chemex, AeroPress, grinders, French press and pour-over equipment, plus a limited-edition Portland Timbers collaboration line and pre-built bundles pairing coffee with hardware.
